About Swedfund

Swedfund is the Development Finance Institution of the Swedish state, with the mission to combat poverty by investing in sustainable businesses in the world’s most challenging markets. We invest in businesses and environments where our funds contribute to creating inclusive growth, tax income, job opportunities and faith in the future. We invest in three specific sectors where we believe we have the best opportunities to achieve sustainable development: Energy & Climate, Financial institutions and Funds, and Health. Since 1979, Swedfund has been engaged as an active, responsible and long-term investor providing equity, loans and expertise. The portfolio’s total contracted amount at the close of 2018 was 4.516 billion SEK, divided between 58 investments in 23 countries.

Each investment is carefully selected and scrutinized by experts to minimize risks and maximize the positive impact potential. Your role and responsibilities

As a Development Impact Analyst you will be part of Swedfund’s ESG & Impact Team with eight people in total, led by Johanna Raynal. The team is responsible for integrating ESG & Impact considerations into the investment process and developing the sustainability approach for the whole portfolio. You will start working with monitoring and evaluation, and gradually increase your responsibility and scope to:

  • Analyse, research and articulate the development impacts for prospective transactions (Impact due diligence)
  • Monitor over time how the portfolio companies are performing against their initial development goals and selected KPIs
  • Advise and assist the portfolio companies in developing their impact frameworks
  • Conduct exit analysis and feed learnings back to investment colleagues
  • Collect data, analyse, and articulate the development impacts on portfolio level to support in developing further our Theories of Change and impact narrative
  • Provide support for the preparations of impact studies in selected sectors, markets, and investments

In addition to working with the various impact tasks, you will have a key role for working with Swedfund’s gender equality agenda. This includes supporting the implementation of the female talent programme Women 4 Growth in the portfolio companies as well as collecting and analysing gender equality data and continuously developing these efforts.

Your work will include close collaboration with Swedfund’s investment teams for all sectors, but also working hands-on with the portfolio companies’ management teams and employees. You are likely to make about four trips/year to Swedfund’s markets.

Do you have what it takes?

The role of a Development Impact Analyst is challenging, however very rewarding. It requires a robust understanding of development effects, gender equality and evaluation processes. For the perfect match, the qualifications include:

  • Relevant academic background with at least a Bachelor’s degree, for example within economics, finance, social studies, development studies, international studies, environmental science or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years of professional experience, hopefully including responsible investments, impact measurements, evaluation processes or development finance. All knowledge of impact investing terminology and tools is considered a merit.
  • A strong business perspective, preferably from a financial institution or within consulting. Experience from investments within the focus areas of energy, health care, banking or private equity funds is an advantage.
  • Experience and passion for gender equality gained from work experience or studies.
  • Curiosity and preferably work experience from developing countries, Africa or South Asia in particular.
  • Full professional proficiency in English.

Besides these qualifications, we hope that you are a person passionate about driving results in a fast-paced organisation, with a proven ability to work effectively and to deliver in time with high quality. Teamwork is key, and you need to be able to function well both individually and in various groups.
