Life-cycle and sustainability improvements in Swedish tech production!

Are you a student writing a master thesis in the autumn? Work with Mousetrapper, one of Sweden’s leading companies within ergonomic technology. While working towards a more sustainable business, they are looking for a future-focused person with a heart for the environment!

About Mousetrapper

Mousetrapper is a company started by Swedish inventor Rolf Strömberg in 1994 with the launch of the first Mousetrapper – a mouse alternative that prevents repetitive strain injury and other issues that can occur when you work with a traditional mouse. Over the years they have extended their range of “Fight-the-Pain-products”. Sustainability is a core value within the company and they always strive to minimize their impact on the environment. This ranges from the materials used, to production, transportation, policies and business choices. Mousetrapper produces their products locally in Sweden which reduces the transportation needs. This gives them the transparency of the entire production which improves the quality – and assures a sustainable process.

Mousetrapper’s mission is to prevent harm to people and the planet by delivering products that contribute to improved public health and the well-being of future generations. They want to be able to develop and grow as a business while having a positive impact on people and the environment. For them, this means that they, as well as everyone else in the supply chain, should have adequate working conditions and take pride in their product. Therefore, their goal is to have all manufacturing in Europe, using only recycled/renewable materials and science-based carbon footprint reduction plan.

Research areas and topics

One of the intriguing questions in relation to sustainability is “can tech companies be sustainable?” Mousetrapper has lowered their carbon emissions by having their factories change to renewable energy along with the goal to use 100% re-usable plastic in their products. One angle of approach in the thesis can be to use the existing rough estimates and underlying data to see the impact such changes can have in a life cycle analysis (LCA), or if it is possible to make the process clean and sustainable with a focus on the end-of-life (EOL). Another approach could be analyzing the raw material used and finding improvements.

While writing your thesis, you will get an insight into Mousetrappers products and how the tech company works to be sustainable. From raw material extraction through manufacturing processes, and to waste management including transport and all energy consumption that comes in between. This assessment will permeate their entire business and your work will be an important part in helping to find ways to improve their operations.

As a thesis writing student you will play a key role in the work on the analysis and Mousetrappers sustainability work. Together with the sustainability department and an external consultant, you will provide an overall picture of the environmental impact of their products and make concrete suggestions for improvement. You will be assisting the company with a better understanding and identifying important priority areas in product design and its footprints.
